Clubs and Activities at YWES

Art Club

Participation in the after-school Art Club is encouraged for students grades 2 - 5 who have a particular interest in Art and would like to further develop their ability. Offer Art Club session once a week. A limited number of students will be accepted for this club.

Safety Patrol

Students volunteer their time before school and after school to assure that others arrive and leave safely. This club works in rain, sleet, and hot, humid weather.

Culture Club

This club is open to 1st - 5th graders. The focus is on different aspects of Japanese culture which includes songs, food, crafts, and games. There will be many fun fieldtrips planned. Parents are encouraged to come anytime to learn the Japanese culture with your child!

Soroban

This club teaches children the Japanese abacus. Students learn the basics of how to use the abacus. The students work at their own pace and advance to higher levels. There is a group of professional/certified Japanese Senseis from Hachiyoji that come and assist us.

Student Council

Each classroom has two representatives in Student Council. Representatives are chosen in the classroom. Student Council is open to all grades except Kindergarten.

The goal of student council is to foster a sense of personal and community pride and responsibility in each student while developing student's understanding of our representative form of government. Fundraisers and other events will be held through out the year and all proceeds will be used to improve the school's academic and social climate.

Band and Choir

The children will participate in an afterschool program learning holiday songs and Japanese songs. Performance by the band and chorus will be offered at school, on-base functions and off base. Students are encouraged to join. Most instruments are provided.

Phonics Club

The Phonic's Club meets every Monday. 
The children are introduced to the 70 Phonograms through drill, games, races, etc.
